Sidney Jean Loosley 1926~2018

                                            Jean Loosley 1926~2018

Jean passed away Sunday, June 24, 2018. She was born March 29, 1926, to Judith Donahue Harris and Sidney Harris of Summer Lake, Oregon.

Jean grew up on a cattle ranch in Summer Lake, graduated from Paisley High School, and earned a degree from Oregon State University in business and accounting. She married John Loosley in 1948. Jean and John moved to Roseburg in 1952. Initially, Jean worked as a bookkeeper for several Roseburg businesses and ultimately worked alongside John after they bought Roseburg Paving Company in 1965. Jean oversaw the financial functions for Roseburg Paving, Beaver State Sand and Gravel, and Beaver State Ready Mix until 2000, when the Loosley family sold the businesses to Knife River.

Jean had a deep and abiding faith that guided her life. She was a person of tremendous character. She was fiercely loyal, guided by integrity, and generous in word and deed. She was an untiring worker and pursued excellence in all she did. She served and cared deeply for her friends and those in need and was committed to giving back. Jean was an active member of the Redeemer’s Fellowship Benevolence Ministry and PEO. Previously, she served on the UCC Foundation Board, the Douglas County Library Foundation Board, the Red Cross Board, the Wildlife Safari Ladies Auxiliary, and as a Deacon at the First Presbyterian Church. She was tremendously grateful to Oregon State and the education she and John received and remained involved with the university throughout her life.

Jean’s greatest passion was her family. She was a committed and loving wife to John for 68 years and a devoted and encouraging mother to her two children. She loved her grandkids deeply and made it a priority to be involved in their lives. Jean loved the outdoors, whether it was camping, fishing, water skiing, snow skiing, playing tennis, or riding her bike.

Jean is survived by her sister, Roberta Fry of Rancho Palos Verdes, CA; her son, Steve Loosley and his wife Shelley Briggs Loosley of Roseburg; her daughter, Judy Loosley Sweeney and her husband Dennis of San Juan Capistrano, CA; and her grandchildren, Katherine Loosley of London, U.K., Megan Sweeney of New York City, and Andrew Sweeney of Boulder, CO.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John Loosley; and her sister, Lorraine Howard.

Jean was a member of Redeemer’s Fellowship.

The Celebration of Life for Jean will be held on Saturday, June 30, 2018, at Redeemer’s Fellowship in Roseburg at 1:00 p.m. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made in Jean’s memory to the Roseburg YMCA Capital Fund, the Umpqua Community College Foundation, or the Benevolence Fund at Redeemer’s Fellowship.
