Edward James Carlyle 1944 ~ 2018

Edward James (Ed) Carlyle - age 74, passed away after a long battle with cancer on Sunday the 2nd of December 2018 in Oakland, Oregon. He was born January 22nd, 1944 in Long Beach, California to George Alfred Carl and Marguerite Anna Burnside. 

He attended Yuba City High School and enlisted in the Army in 1961 at the age of 17 with the permission of his parents. He graduated basic at Ft. Ord, California then went to Lawton, Oklahoma for artillary training. He was stationed in Germany and Lawton from 1962-1966 before serving 3 tours in Vietnam. During this time he married his 1st wife Suzanne Seizinger and two children were born (William Richard and Michael Allen Carlyle). He was injured in May of 1970 and was awarded the Purple Heart and later on that year awarded the Silver Star and Bronze Star for gallantry in action. After Vietnam he was stationed in Germany and Lawton for the next 10 years until his retirement from the Army in October of 1982 at the rank of 1st Sergeant. During this time he married his 2nd wife Erika Mayer and 2 more children were born (Robert Edward and Edward James Carlyle II). In Germany it was here he took up racing and fixing up cars including Corvettes. He lived in Lawton for the next 10 years managing 2 pawn shops and later working for the state employment office as a Veteran rep. In 1992 after his mother had a stroke he and his family moved to Oakland, Oregon to be closer to her where he continued to work for the state employment office until his retirement in 1998. After his retirement from the employment office he and his wife Erika purchased the Tiller Market in Tiller, Oregon. They operated the Tiller Market until Erika’s health declined and they were forced to close and sell the store. In 2015 Erika his wife of 39 years died of cancer. He found out the same year as Erika died that he has cancer as well. After several months of treatment he decided to start to reconcile old issues in his life and decided to get into contact with his high school sweetheart (Linda Mallett) and apologize for how he treated her in High School. They ended up talking and found out that each of their spouses had died of cancer within months of each other. They ended up talking to each other daily and rekindled a fondness of each other and in April of 2017 Ed and Linda were married.

Ed enjoyed gold mining, coin collecting, fishing, hunting, water skiing, flying radio controlled airplane, was a member of the local hamm radio group, a member of the Timberland Corvette Club and an avid baseball and softball fan of his grandkids Garard and Marinda. 

Ed is survived by his wife Linda and his step-children; Anthony Makusky and his wife Jean of Frederick, MD, Jeffery Makusky and his significant other Alice Kneifel of San Antonio, TX, Janette Scott and her husband Charles of Boerne, TX. From Ed’s 2nd marriage he is survived by Robert Carlyle and his wife Kay of Dillard, OR and Eddy Carlyle of Warren, MI. From Ed’s first marriage he is survived by Rick Carlyle and his significant other Marlana Vegas of Sacramento, CA and Michael Carlyle and his fiancé Angel Hart of Reno, NV. 7 grandchildren; Salina Carlyle, Richard Carlyle, Alyssa Carlyle, Julian Carlyle, Michael Carlyle Jr., Marinda Carlyle and Garard Carlyle. 6 step-grandchildren; Anthony Makusky, Madeline Makusky, Jamie Makusky, Tommy Makusky, Hunter Scott and Brady Scott. Along with numerous nieces and nephews. 

Ed is predeceased by his father George and his mother Marguerite, his first wife Suzanne, his 2nd wife Erika, his sisters Alta Shannon and Shirley Brooks and his brother Melvin Carlyle. 

Funeral proceedings will be at Sutter Cemetery in Sutter, California on Saturday December 8th at 10am. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the Shriners Hospital on behalf of Ed. He donated to this organization faithfully.
