Carl Lee Mason went to be with the Lord on January 25, 2018. Carl was born in May 24, 1938, in Washburn, MO, to Leo B. and Mildred L. Mason. He, along with his twin sister, Carlene, were the first of eight children. During the dust bowl years, his father was a farmer and brought the family to California, and eventually Oregon.
He went to school in a different town each year until his sophomore year in High School. He graduated from Sandy Union High School in Sandy, OR, in 1956. He met Sonja (Thomson) during High School at the Pleasant Home Baptist Church where both families attended. Carl married Sonja in 1957. They celebrated 60 years of marriage last June.
Right out of High School, Carl started working for the telephone company, and enlisted in the National Guard. He worked on the line crews in the Portland area until a recession hit in 1959 and Carl took a job in Building Service. In order to get back to line work, he transferred to Roseburg Oregon in 1961, where he worked in Supply and eventually went on to Installer. All the moving in his early years, gave him the ability to make friends easily. Carl took advantage of training opportunities and earned a first class radio license. He ended his career in Special Services where he enjoyed working on the 9-1-1 system and the Oregon Lottery circuits. Carl worked for Pacific NW Bell and US West for 43 years. He loved to fish, hunt, camp, garden (especially harvesting!), hike, play Pinochle and Rook.
Carl became Deacon and Elder at Pine Grove Community Church in Dixonville, OR, for almost 50 years. His blessings included his children, Susan and Ron. After retirement, Carl started working with the Roseburg Community Gleaners and enjoyed every moment of the growing season in Douglas County. He also spent many years working with Telephone Assistance Program (TAP), where he put his knowledge of telephones to work, helping Christian organizations upgrade their phone systems. Survivors include wife, Sonja; daughter, Susan Goddard (Steven) of Eugene; son, Ron (Sharlene) of Vancouver, WA; sisters, Carlene Harstad (Claire) of Lancaster, PA, Betty Morris (Chuck) of Clackamas, OR, Donna Rector (John) of Woodburn, OR, Phyllis Watson (Don Dumont) of Tucson, AZ; brother, Ron Mason (Catherine) of Wichita, KS; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. His parents and two siblings preceded him in death.
Carl will be greatly missed by many! He taught us how to be a friend and to love each other.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Umpqua Valley Christian School Sunday, February 4, 2018, at 2:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Pine Grove Community Church.
